Eye exams
A full look at how your eyes see and how they are
A comprehensive exam checks your vision, how your eyes work together and the health of the front and back of each eye. It is billed to a vision plan when it is a routine exam, and to medical insurance when it is for an eye problem. How fees work explains the difference.
What happens
A history and a vision test
A check of focus, eye movement and eye teaming
A look at the health of the eyes, with drops only when needed
A talk about the results and a copy of your prescription

How often
An age guide for exams
Young children
A first exam in the preschool years, then before school starts, so that problems are found early.
School age
Every year or two, and every six months for a child whose myopia is being managed.
Teens and adults
Every one to two years, or as the doctor advises. Screens and school work can strain the eyes.
Adults over 60
Every year, with a closer look at eye health.
Your doctor may suggest a different schedule for you.
About eye exams
Do we need an exam if everything looks fine?
Yes. Children rarely say their vision has changed, and many eye problems have no early signs.
How long is an exam?
Most take 30 to 45 minutes. A myopia evaluation takes about an hour.
What should we bring?
Current glasses and contact lenses, a list of medicines and your insurance cards.
